Super Mario Bros. Wii Birthday Party (Part 1)

Our family, especially our 7 year old, LOVES Super Mario Bros.  So, we are having a Super Mario Brothers Birthday party.  If you are looking for party ideas, I will be doing a series on how we will be decorating and setting up for the party.

There will be a few less deals from me in the next 24 hours, so hopefully you will be interested in my creations!

First off, I am painting a big Mario and a big Luigi on poster board.  I am doing this free hand in pencil first, then watercolors, then outlining it in black marker.  If you don’t trust yourself to draw it freehand, you could trace a picture and blow it up with a projector and then trace it again.  Or get an artsy friend to draw it for you.

Now, you might be wondering why Mario is missing his famous mustache.   Can you guess why?

Ok, the reason he doesn’t have a mustache, is because this is for the game “Pin the mustache on Mario and Luigi” (in place of pin the tail on the donkey).  I still have to make a bunch of paper mustaches for the kids to pin on while blindfolded (of course).

Now, can you guess what this yellow box is going to be?

This is going to be a pinata.  People typically make a pinata out of paper mache, but since the pinata I am making is in the shape of a cube, I am just using a box.  My son and I painted the box with gesso first, and then with yellow acrylic paint.  You will have to read my next post to see how we transform this into an awesome Super Mario Bros. Wii pinata!

Have you seen the price of a Super Mario Bros pinata in stores?  At the party store I went to  they were selling them unfilled for $24!!!!!!!  In my opinion that is a rip off!!!!  So, I am going to make my own and show you how you can too!  So, stay tuned!
